Another stop at Season 5 where I revisit the popular episode "Forever Ambergris". I haven't seen it in so long even though I know a lot of people like this one for some reason.
The episode is about a veteran photographer (Roger Daltry) who is losing his touch and tricks his younger colleague (Steve Buscemi) into going to a diseased area. This allows the veteran to get the younger photographer's pictures and pass them off as his own, restore his career, and steal his girlfriend at the same time. He even goes as far as to kill the younger photographer after he contracts a deadly disease to put him out of his misery as a cover to kill him. Later on, the veteran photographer gets his comeuppance after he contracts the deadly disease during sex with the girlfriend. The girlfriend got the disease when the younger photographer sends her some scented stuff she likes which got infected the disease.
A pretty decent episode. I'm not exactly sure why this is so well-loved, but it's certainly not bad. I know this episode was known for its gore and bloodshed which it has down in spades. Pretty good effects for the graphic stuff. I was surprised at Roger Daltry's decent performance given that he's more known for music than acting.

Good episode, though not a favorite of mine. I think how extremely gory it is is probably why it's somewhat popular. The fact it was done in an age when practical in-camera make-up effects were still heavily employed is probably part of the appeal, too.

Yes, it was gory and over the top, but it was still one of the good (if not among the best) episodes. It's always a pleasure to watch Steve Buscemi, although we all know in real life someone with his looks would stand no chance of having a relationship with Lysette Anthony, who is absolutely sizzling here Ah well, that's why it's called a horror FANTASY series. btw. for over 20 years I've been wondering what the title is all about. Does anyone get it? Please help!

The title is very strange as Ambergris doesn't factor into the plot at all. It's possible the original EC story it's adapted from made mention of it or it had a role. The episode adaptations had their share of changes from the original stories, so it's possible it was simply lost in translation.

Great episode. The gore effects are pretty cool in this one.

Seeing how well the gruesome effects in this episode still look 25 years later, it's all the more of a reminder how practical in-camera make-up effects tend to age so much better than CGI.

I rewatched this one pretty recently and while not exactly a favorite of mine it's entertaining. For squemish viewers it's definitely one for the barf bag with how disgusting and gruesome it gets with the gore. I've heard the DVD release actually has some extra gore that even HBO didn't allow back when it originally aired.
