There's so many other DC characters who haven't really had a chance to shine, but it's good to see WB is starting to focus on some of the lesser-knowns like Shazam. I love Batman as much as anybody but time to give him a break for a while and let the lesser-known DC heroes have a chance in the spotlight. With the successes of both Wonder Woman and Aquaman, and Shazam so far also being positively received, hopefully this sends the message to DC/WB that audiences and fans want to see these more under the radar heroes get their due. Marvel took chances with lesser-known characters like Black Panther and the GOTG, and look at how handsomely the results paid off for them.
I saw Captain Marvel yesterday and without spoilers, I'll say I have some mixed feelings about it but overall enjoyed it. I was pleasantly surprised to see they didn't push a "girl power" agenda although there were some times it kinda treaded in that territory but overall they kept a lid on that. I liked Brie Larson in the role well enough, the 90s setting and nostalgia was fun (if somewhat underutilized) and they did an amazing job de-aging Samuel L. Jackson. You'd swear they actually physically regressed his age. Goose the Cat stole the show. But overall it is a somewhat lower-tier MCU film. I've been avoiding the internet buzz with how incredibly toxic the reception to the film has been from both sides, it's just so ugly.
Hellboy could well be something of a surprise hit, and I hope it is. The successes of Logan and both Deadpool films showed audiences are interested in R-rated comic book films and there's characters who could surely benefit from it like Hellboy. If it ends up having legs that'll help it as well, even as it's up against the heavy hitters like Avengers: Endgame.

I hope that Shazam becomes a great success so that DC and Warner Bros. can take more chances on their lesser known heroes. I would love to see a Flash movie, Cyborg movie, and Martian Manhunter movie. Glad that you enjoyed Captain Marvel. I have absolutely no interest in seeing it. Especially after the BS drama surrounding it and Rotten Tomatoes, YouTube, and Disney trying to overhype it into something it's not. I hope so, too. By the look of the trailers, Hellboy looks like a fun, badass film. As you said, Logan and the two Deadpool films(and not that damn Once Upon a Deadpool crock) have shown that R rated films can be successful and profitable. Heck, even It has shown us that! Movie studios shouldn't be so freakin' scared of the R rating and should focus more on making genuinely good films despite the rating and not water-down films that shouldn't be tampered with. And yes, there are certain, not all, comic book characters that would benefit from the R rating due to the content they entail in their stories. I certainly hope that Hellboy is good and at least has some legs, even in other territories in the world despite Avengers: Endgame coming out.

If Shazam is a success I bet we'll see lesser-known DC characters finally get films. The ones you mentioned are overdue for films among others. Perhaps even audiences and fans alike are tired of seeing Batman and Superman rehashed over and over, and want to see other DC characters finally get their due. This is them sending that message.
I've avoided the online buzz for Captain Marvel which is so toxic and I wouldn't blame anyone for being sour on the film from all the online drama. It's gotten so ugly from both sides. It reminds me of the fallout that resulted after The Last Jedi came out but tenfold. It's times like this one misses the pre-social media era.
We shall see how Hellboy fares next month, I'm hoping it both turns out good and also does decently at the box office. I'd love to see the character make a comeback and for R-rated comic book films to see a resurgence. I think we're overdue for more R-rated comic book fare and this could be the film to finally do it.

I'm glad that you've avoided the online buzz for Captain Marvel because if you knew what's been going on concerning the film, you'd be disgusted. It's been discovered that Disney has been buying up movie tickets for the film because there aren't many people going to see the film and are boosting up the box office numbers. Even the media is attacking those who simply don't like the film and calling them "sexist trolls". Just a lot of crazy shit happening. Because of this, I have no interest in seeing this film nor even Avengers: Endgame at this point. I hope so. The new Hellboy film looks like a fun, gritty, and crazy film that's worth watching. And hopefully, it's successful to where it inspires studios to make more R-rated comic book films.

DC has so many lesser-known and more under the radar characters who deserve to finally shine and hopefully between Aquaman and Shazam that's what we'll see. I'm sure Marvel must have some other lesser-knowns as well. They took a big gamble with the likes of the GOTG and Black Panther, but the results handsomely paid off for them.
I've stayed away from the online buzz around Captain Marvel. It's just disgusting, from both sides with how immature both are acting. To be derided as either anti-male for liking it or called a misogynist for disliking it, is this what society has come to? Ugh. I don't blame anyone from being turned off of seeing the film either way as a result. It's a shame because it's actually a good movie and it's unfortunate the toxic online buzz has casted such an ugly shadow over it.
I do as well, and here's to hoping we see both DC and Marvel explore their more Horror-oriented characters as a result if Hellboy is a success. I'm hopeful for the Swamp Thing TV show coming up, he's a character who's been long overdue for a comeback. Always liked the two live-action movies along with both the animated and live-action series.

It's like nowadays, complete censorship and the removal of freedom of speech is trying to take hold(and we must push back against that). It's BEYOND DISGUSTING! It's also INFURIATING!!! I'm a woman but it pisses me off that these damn critics and mainstream media people are calling a lot of male Marvel fans sexist trolls for simply not liking the film! I'm not saying that there aren't any sexist trolls. BUT these assholes act as if every male fan dislike the movie because it has a female lead which is BULLSHIT!!! A lot of these same male fans have also loved Wonder Woman, the Alien films, the Kill Bill films, and other good films starring women and girls. Plus, it was reported that 61% of the people who went to see this film were males! And yet they want to say that those who don't like the movie are sexist trolls?! And this is how you know that this movie is part of that Feminism shit. The fact that Marvel has basically fallen into the same trap as Star Wars, Star Trek, and other franchises that are currently suffering from this SJW crock is devastating. Because I love the Marvel Movies and the characters, and to see them being handled poorly like this is awful. Yes! Also, I haven't heard about the Swamp Thing TV show. What's that about? It sounds interesting? From DC, I would like to see a Lobo film. But the way things are with Marvel now because of Disney's tricks, I don't know if will get more R-rated comic book movies.

I usual keep quiet on politics (and for the record I'm an Independent, I think just about every political party is equally untrustworthy), but I'm so tired of seeing women empowerment everywhere lately and shoved in your face so much. Ironically much of it is largely a kneejerk reaction to Trump with the outcome of the 2016 election and his disgusting comments on the Access Hollywood tape, which is another reason to hate him (anda whole other issue I won't get into beyond this point). I've got nothing at all against a woman-led film but to have it led by a woman for the sake is stupid and does nothing to empower either gender. It's both sad and ridiculous to see the extremes both sides have fallen into, there's no happy medium anymore, it seems. The Captain Marvel fiasco is such a prime example of it, you either hate women or you're a hardcore feminist. Just how did we get to this point?
Well, to get back to a far lighter subject (I always do my best to avoid any sort of political talk), I believe the Swamp Thing TV show is to air on the CW this year if I'm not mistaken. Look forward to it and hope it revitalizes the character in a good way. I always liked Swamp Thing and he's overdue for a comeback for sure. It'd be great if he got an R-rated film adaptation, someday.

Over at the IMDb 2 free forums, people are making mockery of the film's RT score all because it's 10% and questioning me all because I'm basically the only one defending the film.

It'd be a shame for the film to be both a critical and commercial failure, and possibly harm the future of R-rated comic book films. There's some characters who should never be neutered for a PG-13.

That's what I'm extremely concerned about. Some comic book characters shouldn't be watered down at all. I hope that the film has some sort of success.

Even if it's not particularly good I'm still hoping it does decently at the box office and we see more R-rated comic book films and characters. Logan and both Deadpool films showed there's absolutely an audience and interest for such films. I'd also like to see more Horror-oriented comic book films made, and perhaps this could open the floodgates of sorts if it does well.

It'd be great to see a resurgence of R-rated comic book films down the line.
Saw Shazam last weekend and found it quite fun. Different from the usual comic book film and all the better for it. It had moments that were definitely Horror-like, particularly whenever the demonic manifestations of the Seven Deadly Sins were present.
