They're both very good films. Even if you're tired of ghost films with how prominent they've been for so long, these two are both well-made and unique enough that they stand out from the crowd.

I've heard that both films are good. I'll check them out sometime.

I'd be interested to see the director handle a more Horror-oriented superhero film at some point, which at times Shazam definitely bordered on being.

There's still so many Horror-oriented superheroes who are overdue for a film treatment and more importantly they need to be in the hands of good, caring filmmakers.

I know Venom is getting a sequel but I'd so much prefer a proper reboot. Or at least the original R-rated cut. Some characters just aren't meant for the PG-13 rating.

But I've made peace with neither of those things happening. Even if they do release an R-rated cut, it won't mean a damn thing anymore because they've shown their true cowardice and greed. They've removed Venom's balls forever and just made him another watered-down, run-of-the-mill anti-hero wimp. They're going to put him in the PG-13 rated Spideyverse and so be it. I just don't care to ever watch it. For WB, unless they'll end up pulling the same stunt as Sony, at least their upcoming Joker and Birds of Prey films are R rated. And even though the film didn't do so well and it could've been better, at least Lionsgate was brave enough to release an R rated Hellboy film. As you said, some characters just aren't meant for the PG-13 rating. But Hollyweird doesn't give a shit about that. All they care about is squeezing every single dime and penny from the average filmgoer. Good quality and staying true the nature of the characters be damned.

Thing that's unfortunate is how Carnage will suffer as a result of the PG-13 rating. Doing him in a family-friendly manner just doesn't work. It's all the more unfortunate since Woody Harrelson is perfectly casted and if you've ever seen Natural Born Killers you know he can perfectly portray a complete maniac like Carnage. With a PG-13 rating he'll be severely held back.
The upcoming Joker looks promising and the fact it'll be rated R has me cautiously optimistic. We've been long overdue to get The Joker in his unbound form with an R-rated film and it's finally happening. Legendary as he was in The Dark Knight, it still feels like we've never gotten a 100% proper Joker in any medium outside the comics without an R rating, so I'm very happy that's finally being rectified. The Joker as an unrestrained maniac the way he's supposed to be.

Then again, this IS Sony we're talking about. We can't trust Sony to do anything right nor stand by on their promises. I've long given up on the Venom AND Carnage films because they're DAMAGED GOODS for Hollyweird studios to grab way more money through children and teens. I could give two shits about what happens with or in any of their future films because I know that that's NOT how they're supposed to be represented onscreen. TO HELL WITH IT.
I'm also cautiously optimistic about the upcoming Joker film. I simply hope that the film is a good movie.

If The Joker film both turns out surprisingly good and is also a financial success, it'd be good to see it lead to a resurgence of more R-rated comic book films. Logan and both Deadpool films showed there's both interest and demand.

Logan and both Deadpool films showed there's both interest and demand. I certainly hope so! As I've said countless times before, I think that at least half of the comic book films should be rated R while the rest are PG-13 or even PG. That way, there would be more of a variety for different audiences no matter the ages.

Even if the film itself doesn't turn out too good I'm still pulling for Joker to be a hit as R-rated comic book films need more prominence and certain characters deserve to be properly portrayed with the freedom the R-rating grants them. Deadpool and Logan benefitted so much from the rating, and characters like Joker and Carnage also would.

I guess we'll see come October how well Joker fares. I'm skeptical about aspects of the trailer, but at the same time I'm truly looking forward to finally seeing a proper R-rated cinematic version of the character and am hopeful it's success will lead to more R-rated comic book films and the more hard-edged characters getting their due.
