It doesn't help that in so many R-rated films the blood/gore is digital and there's the super-annoying shakycam and quick-cutting so many use. Really takes away from the impact for me. The days of movies being cleanly shot and edited, and in-camera special effects extensively employed is something that's sorely missed and needed back in film again.

Yes very true. For me the whole feel of films are totally different. Back then the dialogue was much wittier and better overall. Also they weren’t trying to satisfy certain people, they would take more risks. I loved those medium budget studio movies they used to do that were very unique/different. Today I feel most of the movies are similar even different genres

Shakycam is a big pet peeve of mine with movies and I hate how so many modern films employ it. Shakycam combined with erratic editing ruins a lot of films for me to the point I don't even find some watchable.

Yeah the shakycam has gotten out of control.

I don't get motion sickness but I can imagine for people who have it they can't even watch films with shakycam to avoid getting sick.

Any Walter Hill fans? He was/is great at those R rated films that they don’t make anymore. Extreme Prejudice(1987) is one of my favorite and it’s never mentioned or shown on tv. It does t even have a proper dvd release. It’s crazy how many awesome films of that era are so hard to find now on any platform

I enjoy many of Walter Hill's films. I like how many of his films are very hard-edged and pull no punches with their content. His films would have a hard time being made today. He also directed some classic TFTC episodes with The Man Who Was Death and Cutting Cards.

Yes he directed 3 episodes I believe. His style is very reminiscent of Sam Peckinpah

I remember Thomas Jane (The Punisher in the 2004 film adaptation) even wanted him to direct the film's sequel. He'd be a good fit for The Punisher with the oppressive, harsh urban settings many of his films have. Which is a must for a character like The Punisher.

Just rewatched Cliffhanger with Stallone. I Forgot how much I enjoyed that film. Had its flaws for sure but they certainly don’t make action films like that anymore

I have a lot of fondness for Cliffhanger. It's very nostalgic for me as I watched it a lot as a kid. It's one of my favorite Stallone films alongside the Rambo series.

Agreed. I felt after Cliffhanger he made a lot of duds like Judge Dredd And Assasins. I really enjoyed Cop Land because it showed his dramatic acting chops for the first time in many years

I feel with The Expendables films they tried too hard to re-capture the 80s/early 90s glory days of Action films and it felt like it came too late after the fact. Plus the use of digital gore and shakycam hurt the whole idea of trying to harken back to older Action films. It's an okay series, but really feels like a big missed opportunity and like it happened a decade or so too late.

Yes I agree with that. Sadly we they can never recapture the magic of those 80’s early 80’s action/thriller films. Like you said the CGI takes a lot away from it plus the scripts just Astor t as good. I’m not saying those old action films were works of arts but they were witty, violent, and entertaining

I feel The Expendables 2 was definitely the best of the three, but there was still the feeling of too little, too late and like that type of film really should've materialized much earlier. I remember the uproar over the internet back in 2012 when EX2 was announced to be PG-13. Funny thing is watching the film it weirdly feels PG-13 and like the more violent bits were added in digitally. Again, taking away from the whole point of trying to be a throwback to no holds barred 80s/early 90s Action films.
