Yeah seeing it when it came out was one of my better theater experiences

Earlier in this topic the new Suicide Squad movie was talked about. I caught it last night and enjoyed it, and without a doubt it's the Suicide Squad film we should've gotten back in 2016. Lots of fun with all of the craziness and over the top violence and gore of the comics, and King Shark stole the show. It drags at times though and unfortunately much of the gore was done digitally, which is always off-putting and something I notice immediately. Seeing digital blood/gore always makes me yearn for the Tom Savini days. But overall a fun movie and I'm glad we finally have a good Suicide Squad film and that we're getting more R-rated comic book films, even if comic book film fatigue is setting in.

Cool. Personally I wasn’t a fan of Suicide Squad. I feel like even when they make an R rated comic book film it’s still not the same as how they did it in the 90’s. Even the pg13 comic book films of the 90’s were edgier I felt

I don't even remember the 2016 movie which goes to show how forgettable and unremarkable it was. And trying to neuter a violent group of characters like that for a family audience is ridiculous. It reminds me of the 1997 Spawn film with how they made it PG-13 despite the extremely dark and violent origin of the character. An assassin who becomes a demonically-powered superhero after literally being sent to Hell isn't exactly something that screams family-friendly.

Yeah I remember Spawn. That’s aground the time when they stated to make superhero movies campy again like Batman Forever/Batman and Robin

I regret I didn't see Speed at a younger age. It's a blast of a movie and still holds up as a 90s treasure for sure. No matter when you saw it, I hope that it rocked your world.

My family and I just saw it today and we enjoyed it as well. I have a few issues with it like some parts of the story and some characters. But overall, it was fun, hilarious, unapologetically violent, and surprisingly heartwarming during certain moments. Yes, King Shark was something else. He was so brutal yet I somehow ended up liking him so much and I didn't want to. But who I thought was the heart of the film, for me, was Ratcatcher II. She ended up being the real MVP. I agree that the CGI blood can be quite distracting and off-putting. Blood squibs need to make a comeback.

And with James Gunn coming from a background doing low-budget Horror you'd think the emphasis on in-camera gore would've been there. It took me out a few times. But all in all, I left the theater feeling like for the most part the Suicide Squad were finally done justice on-screen. Now let's get Spawn a decent live-action film, he's been overdue for it and the 1997 movie just didn't cut the mustard.

If I were directing a movie like this, I would try to balance it out by adding blood squibs and CGI blood in certain moments. I would've mixed it up a bit. Btw, speaking of Horror and James Gunn, I've noticed some horror bits he had borrowed in this film. For example, the way the starfish attach themselves to people's faces reminds me of The Facehugger from Alien. And those who have the starfish on their faces end up walking around like the zombies in the original Night of the Living Dead. CREEPY AF. So, in essence, The Suicide Squad is basically Guardians of the Galaxy meets Deadpool meets The Avengers with sprinkles of Alien and a pinch of Night of the Living Dead. That's actually an interesting yet cool ass mash-up and the film mixed these very well.

I noticed that as well. There were times Gunn's background in Horror definitely creeped in during certain moments.

I will say I was disappointed at Michael Rooker's short role and screentime. He's such a terrific actor and to see him used so little in this was a disappointment. Definitely a downgrade from his turn as Yondu in the GOTG films.

He's such a good actor and even in a not so good film his presence always elevates it to a degree and makes it at least watchable. Such a shame he was never in a TFTC episode.
