Probably. Venom's popularity back in the 90s was both the best and worst thing that happened to him, since it gave him more exposure but also probably caused Marvel to neuter him overtime given his popularity with kids. He certainly wasn't a family-friendly character at all in his initial appearances.

Great point. What had happened to Venom in the 90s and with the 2018 film is what this thread is talking about. If a character or movie property that's aimed at older audiences becomes popular, they'll get watered-down for children. It's almost as if Venom was doomed to be toned down from the jump.

It's bad enough it happened with Venom and I shudder to think how badly handled Carnage will be without an R-rating.

At this point, unless I'm proven wrong, there's really no hope for Carnage.

Carnage without an R-rating is asinine to me. Then again we also live in a world that gave us a PG-13 Spawn film too, of all things.

Hopefully, the Joker film's HUGE SUCCESS will make them reconsider and do an R rated Carnage film. Then again, who am I kidding? Sony is too damn worried about money and appeasing parents and children. Btw, Joker had beaten Venom's box office record. Sony should be KICKING THEMSELVES!

I have no doubt an R-rated Venom film would've been a hit. Sony should feel foolish that they even entertained making it PG-13 let alone actually having done it.

I strongly believe that an R rated Venom movie would've been at least way more interesting and probably would've made more money. But, THEY BLEW IT!!! And this wouldn't have been so bad if they didn't spend over a year LYING through their teeth in saying that this film is going to be aimed at adults in the first place!
Sony should be ashamed of themselves over this asinine decision, especially since Joker is now a little over $50 million closer to $1 billion.

The fact Joker is looking to be even more profitable than Venom goes to show R-rated films can indeed be a massive commercial success, and Sony shot themselves in the foot by making Venom family-friendly.

THANK YOU!!! Joker has proven that R rated movies, especially when they're done right, can make HUGE DOLLARS. Sony shot themselves in both feet by making Venom rated PG-13.

This isn't also taking into account the additional money it'll make once it hits cable and the home formats.

I bet Joker will be a huge seller on the home formats. I know the Blu-ray is a day one purchase for me.

Joker's already crossed a billion now, I'm beyond happy for the success.
