Being a big film buff I always look into directors work and like to assess what they have done and their strength and weaknesses. Not as much on tv but takes from the Crypt had a lot of well known directors on the show. Here are a few of my favorites
Walter Hill- his films are kick ass. In his own words every film he makes us a “western”. I’m sure 48 hours is the most popular but I love films like Extreme Prejudice(1987), Long Riders(1980) and Southern Comfort(1981). His Tales from the Crypt episodes are mostly very good which makes sense since he was the producer. His first two “Cutting Cords” and the other one with William Sadler and the penalty are two of the stronger ones. His final one “Deadline” admittedly is his weakest one but the idea is interesting.
Tom Holland- ive always felt Holland is a very underrated writer/director despite writing and directing two horror classics with Fright Night and Child’s Play. He also wrote the very surprisingly solid Psycho 2, Cloak and Dagger, and Class of 1984. His tales from the Crypt episodes are a mixed bag. I know Many don’t like “Lover Cone Hack to Me”. Personally I kind of like it despite its flaws. Now his second one “Four Sided Triangle” is one of my favorites and has a much better reception than his first one. His final one is also a mixed bag but is one of Brad Pitts first roles.
John Frankenheimer- one of my favorite classic film directors who directed so many great films. I highly recommend his paranoia trilogy Manchurian Candidate(1962) Seven Days in May(1964) and Seconds(1966). They all have a political/social theme to them but also have a twilight zone/tales from the crypt vibe. I liked his episode “Maniac at Large” and wish he was able to do another before the show was over.
Looking forward to others opinions!!!
