Over the past few months I have been catching up on movies while also rewatching older movies I haven’t seen in a long time. One of them is a this teen crime drama from the 80’s. Unlike most teen movies especially from the John Hughes era this one was very dark. It was based on an actual incident of a high school burnout who strangled and raped his girlfriend. Then he bragged about it and brought his friends to the see the body. What even scarier is that the friends didn’t alert the police. It’s features one of the earliest roles if Keanu Reeves who gives a very good dramatic performance. Dennis Hopper is terrific in this. Crispin Glover(Back to the Future) is so over top but it fits for the movie since his character is a speed freak. Anyway if you haven’t seen it check it out because it’s almost like a realistic horror movie. It feels like something you would get out of the EC comics in certain ways except it really happened

I remember seeing this long ago on cable, it's good from my memory. Definitely one I'm overdue to re-visit.

Yeah it’s definitely one of those odd dark movies you would see on late night cable back in the day. For whatever reason I’ve always been drawn to those types of films. Heathers is another that falls into that dark teen drama/thriller

I just finished watching this from my DVR recording, for the first time in many years. A very good film and quite haunting as well, as it feels like it echoes much of reality. It was made back in the 80s but it still feels timely and relevant even today.

Yup. I was only 4 or 5 when this came out but I remember my older cousin talking about it since it was dark and controversial at the time.

Watching it also made me realize how much I miss Dennis Hopper (R.I.P.), such an excellent actor who's mere presence always elevated anything he was in. I miss him and new performances from him.

The world of movies doesn't really seem the same without him ever since his passing, sadly.

Yeah I miss a lot of the old Hollywood stars. Robert Mitchum was my favorite actor

Despite this film being very 80s at the same time it feels very contemporary as well for some reason. A film that's of it's time yet still resonates today.

Yeah I certainly could see this happening now except they would post the body on social media

For sure.
The movie also reminds me somewhat of the Bobby Kent murder case, which the book and film Bully were loosely based on. In the sense some of the people involved stupidly bragged about it and thus incriminated themselves and each other. Goes to show how truth will always be so much stranger than fiction.

One thing I forgot to mention is that back on 2007 I was in LA for a trip and went to a special screening of Rivers Edge and the director Tim Hunter was present and had a Q and A with the audience afterward. I was a Media Studies/Film Major in College so it was pretty cool
