In many different shots, he looks malevolent and like he is plotting. Especially with the promos. Despite the mouth having limited movements, the eyebrow and cheekbones really emphasized that look

I kinda wish his Season 1 personality had been kept intact during the rest of the series. While I also like the more comedian-like Crypty of Season 3 onwards, he was genuinely frightening in the first season not just with his appearance but also his personality. In Season 2 he became a bit more funny but still had some of that sinister demeanor from Season 1. Season 3 onward he became much more humorous. Kind of like how Freddy Krueger initially in the first few Nightmare On Elm Street films was genuinely frightening before becoming so much more comical and funny later on.
His much more solemn, sinister personality in Season 1 was largely due to the limitations of the puppet they had during that season, but I feel it actually worked since it made him that much scarier.

Which is one of the reasons why I enjoy the earlier seasons much more than the later ones. Don't get me wrong, I love where they went with his personality. But I think the fact that he can frighten you as much as make you laugh, made the viewing hex-perience much more enjoyable.

I definitely agree. Crypty is still entertaining even when comedic, but in the first season and even Season 2 to an extent he was genuinely frightening with not just his appearance but also his personality. Much like The Joker, he can make you laugh but also make you very uneasy at the same time because you never know what he's capable of and he can kill you without warning.
