To make it's more amazing how such a graphically violent show like TFTC was marketed towards kids as was a ghastly character like the Crypt Keeper. Only in the 80s and 90s.

Which was intentional, as originally the animated series was to use the live-action puppet to bookend the segments, but it was dropped for obvious reasons when the censors previewed it. The show went with the cute cartoon version instead and his demeanor was also toned down.

From IMDb's trivia:
To market the Cryptkeeper to children, the show's creators had to somewhat water down his appearance, his characterization, and his puns. John Kassir would go on to say, "Nelvana created a kinder, gentler personality for the children's Crypt Keeper, and it feels a little uncharacteristic at times."

I could've totally seen the network getting lots of calls from angry parents and the show causing a great deal of controversy. Which in hindsight would've been amusing.
Funny enough years later Kids WB would recycle footage of the live-action puppet when they had the Crypt Keeper hosting their block, which was pretty unbelievable to see.
