We all know the 80’s were the era of the slasher movie genre. After Halloween and Friday the 13th there were a lot of rip offs trying to cash in on their success. Many were bad but some had an interesting take on the genre. By the late 80’s it started to die down snd mainly went straight to video. However recently I found one that I think is a hidden gem. It’s not really a slasher film though it starts off with that type of setup. It actually turned out to be a well done southern thriller that is actually pretty grim despite not having a lot of blood. Also unlike a lot of slashers the acting is pretty good despite having mainly unknowns in the case. I know Vinegar Syndrome released the bluray not too long ago and I think it’s probably one of the better films they released.

Not sure I've heard of this but you've piqued my interest to give it a look.

Yeah it’s lesser known. I only found it the Tubi stream which has a lot of underrated/little seen horror films from the 80’s and 90’s. Then I looked it up and saw that it has a pretty good reputation as a under seen gem and like I mentioned it was given a nice bluray released from Vinegar Syndrome which is know for releasing those types of films

I own a few Vinegar Syndrome releases, they make good stuff for sure. Along with Scream/Shout Factory, Arrow, Vestron, Blue Underground, etc. I own many titles from all of these.

That’s Awesome! They just released Reform School Girls (1986) not that long ago and decided to pick it up. It’s one of those “so bad it’s good” women in prison pictures that were very popular during that time. Also the director Tom DeSimone directed some horror stuff like Hell Night(1981) and several episodes of Freddy’s Nightmares. But yeah Shallow Grave is very well done considering it was pretty low budget

A lot of those low-budget genre films of the time still hold up pretty well. The filmmakers were forced to be creative with the small budgets they had to work with in so many of those films and they pulled it off well.

Plus usually low budget films usually had/have more creative freedom unlike bigger studio films. This film is a perfect example. I don’t to spoil anything but it certainly doesn’t follow the usually slasher formula

There's a definite charm a lot of movies like this have. From a bygone, simpler time.

Yeah I enjoy finding hidden gems from those times. Like I’ve mentioned before I don’t watch many modern films anymore. Industry has completely changed for the worse. I’m just happy there are so many films from a bygone era that are out there to be discovered

Older films are always new for first-time viewers and take on a new life. I always enjoy discovering an older film that for years eluded me and when I finally see it becomes a new favorite.

Yeah I really enjoyed this film for the amount of money they had to work with. I read that it was originally suppose to be about aliens lol. I’m glad that was changed because it become a pretty tense and grim thriller

It probably got changed due to the small budget and not being able to afford much in terms of special effects and such. There's a practicality you get from a lot of older films that you don't see in a lot of newer ones that pile on the CGI.

It's definitely one I want to give a look. Even a lifelong Horror fan like myself still has a lot of older films to see that for one reason or another I haven't gotten around to giving a look.

Yeah I think you will like this one. Like I mentioned it’s not the typical slasher and goes in unexpected directions
