The seventh (and final) season of the show is generally considered the weakest. I remember really hating it when I first saw it, but I've liked it a bit better on subsequent viewings. One of my biggest problems with it is just a noticeable lack of energy and enthusiasm. It starts well enough with Fatal Caper, a fantastic episode but just goes downhill from there, with episodes feeling very inert and stale for the most part, just look at A Slight Case of Murder and The Kidnapper. The episode Cold War feels to me like a deliberate attempt to inject some excitement back into the show, but even there I thought it felt kind of half-assed. The episodes being british don't really help, since the aesthetic and tone just seems naturally different.

Well, the change in tone does play a role, but it's the smallest of the problems I think. Fatal Caper is a very good episode indeed, it's well-written and has internationally known stars in it, like Natasha Richardson and Bob Hoskins. But most episodes suffer from having lesser-known actors, sure some were up-and-coming, like Daniel Craig, Ewan McGregor and Steve Coogan who went on to bigger things, but others are complete unknows even to me, and I consider myself pretty familiar with British film and TV. Now, that would not be as much of a problem if the scripts were of a consistent quality. Sure, every season had its not-so-good episodes, but this one seems wildly uneven. For every good one (Fatal Caper, The Third Pig (the highlights of the season IMO) Confession (suspenseful if a bit predictable), and even A Slight Case of Murder, Horror in the Night and Cold War, which I actually found quite good), there is another that's completely silly or even terrible. I wonder who thought Ear Today, Gone Tomorrow, Kidnapper and Smoke Wrings were acceptable enough to bring into such a legendary show. This is a really low budget season, and unfortunately it shows. If they had already decided this would be the last season, why didn't they invest in higher quality writers and actors, or otherwise just bring out a shorter season (they did that on Season 1 after all), with just the better episodes making it onto the show. As it is, Season 7 is definitely the weakest one and not the great end that this classic show deserved.

Definitely agree with the general consensus that it's the weakest season, but it has some good episodes. It definitely seemed interest had waned when it came to this season and there was no interest from any of the involved parties, which was also a problem with Season 6.

Definitely the weakest season, but there are some good episodes scattered about.
