Moving this to the Graveyard as it's more suited there, as the Chamber Of Chills is more for Horror discussions not pertaining to TFTC.
One example I can think of is Woody Harrelson in Natural Born Killers. Up to that point he was mostly known for his comedic performances, and it was such a shock to see him portraying a complete maniac like his character there. After that he started diversifying with his performances to the point he can do pretty much anything and has evolved well past his comedic roles he started out with.

Rock Hudson is a classical film star who was known mostly for Romantic Comedies. However in the 60’s he played a Audi at type role in a real good movie called Seconds(1966). Seconds is a very good dark sci fi thriller that that a lot of TFTC vibes

Kurt Russell in Death Proof. I must admit I’m not a big fan of the film but Russell is the best part of it. He had mainly played heroic parts but I think this is his only villain role

I think I only saw it once when it came out in 2007. I liked Planet Terror better but The best thing about Death Proof was Kurt Russell

I was put off by how cheesy the previews made it look but seeing the overwhelmingly positive reception it has, I'll give it a shot, sometime. I think the trailers making it look so awful put off a lot of people from checking it out, myself included. Most people seem to prefer Planet Terror.

I think they made the trailers intentionally bad to recreate the bad trailers they made for grind house movies back in the 70’s and 80’s. I remember in between movies they played a bunch of fake trailers that were made specifically to show during intermission

I get the filmmakers were trying to replicate how cheesy and over the top a lot of the grindhouse movies back then were and wanted to stay faithful to that, but a lot of then newer moviegoers didn't get it and were put off. Which is too bad because bad advertising is all it takes to kill a movie's chances of success. Though to be fair, the film was targetted at fans of 70s and 80s-era exploitation films and that's a fairly niche demographic. And one that doesn't exactly make up a sizable portion of general moviegoers.
I recall one of the fake trailers was for Hobo With a Shotgun? I've seen the actual movie of that and like it a lot.

It bombed pretty badly, which is a shame because I like the idea behind it and think it could've potentially become a new series.

Jon Lovitz in TFTC Top Billing episode. Usually he is known for comedy but he really showed his range and darker side in that episode

Yea true. It always interesting seeing comedic actors play villains. Albert Brooks in Drive(2011) is another that comes to mind
